The April workshops at the new studio (Remainders Creative Reuse in Pasadena) were tons of fun and I’m hoping to be back there in the fall. Check back for details.

ONE-DAY HANDS-ON WORKSHOP: 9AM - 4PM*
ALL TOOLS AND MATERIALS PROVIDED
$185 FULL DAY SESSION

*Studio will remain open until 5:00pm so you can complete any unfinished pieces.

The BEGINNER Encaustic Workshop focuses on materials, tools, safe studio practices, collage, stencils, incising and transfer techniques. Demonstrations and lectures are followed up in the studio by blocks of time that allow students ample opportunities to experiment with techniques and create finished pieces.  

*OPEN STUDIO is an opportunity for students with encaustic experience to refine techniques and develop/finish work started in other workshops, as well as create new works utilizing all they learned in the Beginners and/or Intermediate workshops.  Feedback and advice will be available if needed.

Class size is limited to 8 students. No previous drawing or painting experience is necessary.  

beginning STUDENTS WILL LEARN

  • Safe studio set up and practices

  • Use of tools and implements

  • All about encaustic materials: paints, medium, supports, collage materials, etc.

  • The history of encaustic and view a slide show of some contemporary artists’ works

  • All about encaustic techniques: paint application, layering, fusing, color mixing, pours, creating texture, scraping/incising, collage and embedding, image transfer, masking and stencils

  • And, if we have time… even more!

  • Students will leave with 2 to 5 completed works.

In BEGINNERS and INTERMEDIATE workshops, demonstrations are punctuated with ample studio time to practice.   For OPEN STUDIO students, demonstrations will be given by request.  In ALL workshops, individual instruction is provided.

*OPEN STUDIO IS AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE BEGINNER WORKSHOP OR WHO HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH ENCAUSTIC PAINTING.   

Intermediate and Open Studio* Encaustic Workshop

INTERMEDIATE Encaustic Workshop will build on the techniques and skills learned in Beginners' Encaustic Workshop, and explore additional techniques including the use of torches, advanced stencils, alcohol inks, creating texture, and embedding 3-D objects.)

The class size is limited to 8 students.  No previous drawing or painting experience is necessary, but experience with encaustic is essential.

Students will learn

  • How to use a torch

  • Working with alcohol inks

  • Advanced stencil work and overlays

  • Advanced your skills in creating texture

  • Advanced embedding techniques

  • Use of textiles and fabric transfers

Students will leave with 2 to 5 completed works

In BEGINNERS and INTERMEDIATE workshops, demonstrations are interspersed with ample studio time to practice.   For OPEN STUDIO students, demonstrations will be given by request.  In ALL workshops, individual instruction is provided.
